Commercial Block Wall Insulation Options

The method and insulation used for the concrete block walls of your commercial building will depend on whether it is a new build or an existing structure.

Here are some of the options for concrete block walls.

Spray Foam Insulation

In the case of a school or commercial building that has concrete block walls, spray foam can be sprayed directly on the outside walls and covered with brick.

You have two options when it comes to spray foam.

The first option is to spray closed cell foam on the outside of the building before the brick exterior. The second option would be to spray the foam on the interior of the block if drywall would be built out.

Spray foam insulation creates an air barrier that will keep the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer, as well as not cost a fortune in monthly energy bills.

New York or New Jersey – Closed cell spray foam should be 4- to 5- inches on the ceiling and 2- to 3-inches in the walls . This might come as a surprise to you, but honestly, this is all the spray foam it takes to get the biggest bang for your buck with the air seal and thermal resistance needed for certain areas of the home

How Thick Does Spray Foam Insulation Need to Be?

Spray-Foam-Conductive-Heat-Flow-Reduction

Is 2 inches of closed cell foam enough?

The thickness of spray foam really depends on where it’s being applied and what you’re trying to accomplish.

Now generically speaking, we usually recommend open cell spray foam to be 6- to 10-inches on a roof deck or ceiling and 3-inches in the walls. Closed cell spray foam should be 4- to 5- inches on the ceiling and 2- to 3-inches in the walls.

This might come as a surprise to you, but honestly, this is all the spray foam it takes to get the biggest bang for your buck with the air seal and thermal resistance needed for certain areas of the home. We have had homeowners in the past request 8 – to 10 -inches of closed cell on their roof deck.

The idea is that the more foam, the higher the R-Value, but that’s not how that works either. R-Value does matter, however thermal resistance is what R-Value measures. If you have an air seal, that’s the most important thing. Stacking R-Value on top of R-Value diminishes your return and you’re just wasting money.

After you reach a certain threshold, like the amount required to create an air seal, you don’t see anymore return on investment by adding the extra foam.

The measurements we use come directly from the manufacturer and those measurements create not only an air seal but also thermal resistance.

At the end of the day, a good contractor doesn’t want to see a homeowner wasting money. The whole point with creating an air seal is to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient home that will save money in the long run.

As you’re getting ready to insulate your home, one of your first questions will most likely be, “How much insulation do I need?” The amount of insulation your home needs primarily depends on two factors:

  • The region you live in
  • The area of your home that needs to be insulated
The Right Amount of Insulation for Your Home in New York

Notes
About R-value: R-value is a measurement of a material’s ability to resist heat flow. The higher the
R-value, the greater the insulating power. Installers should consult data sheets provided by polyiso
manufacturers for information on product-specific R-values.
Code Compliance: The International Energy Conservation Code recognizes ASHRAE 90.1 as an
alternate compliance option for both new construction and existing buildings.

SPRAY FOAM INSULATION FOR HOMES.COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS.

QUEENS, NY. STATEN ISLAND, NY. BRONX,NY. MANHATTAN, NY. NYC

“How much does spray foam insulation cost?”

Spray Foam Insulation Cost “Price” Per Square Foof. *** Open Cell Spray Foam $0.40 To $0.65 Per Board Foot *** Closed Cell Spray Foam $1.20 To $1.50 Per Board

This is one of most typical questions architects and builders will be asked by their clients when they’ve been recommended the modern insulation solution. Yet the answer can be as varied as the cost of the spray foam insulation has a number of variables that influence the final price.

As with most building products, the cost of spray foam insulation will be influenced by variables such as quantity, labor, type and region. Think about how the price of a car is influenced by the options, model and make you choose. For example, an entry level vehicle may start at $12,500 but when you factor in the extras such as metallic paint, automatic transmission, rear spoiler, speaker systems, etc. Then factor on-road delivery and state tariffs… the final sale price will have changed dramatically. As car buyers we think similarly as home buyers when purchasing something. We want to invest in the best options available that will last, and perform as expected, for the long term.

So how much does spray foam insulation cost? Focusing on the cost of spray foam insulation may initially deter some from investing in the insulation, yet if you consider the variables that influence the price and think about the return on investment over the long-term, the cost of spray foam cost becomes a wise investment.

Help your clients understand the breakdown of the price of spray foam. The price of spray foam will be influenced by factors including:

Spray Foam Type

What kind of spray foam insulation is being used? Does the project require closed-cell insulation or can open-cell spray foam insulation be used? Open-cell spray foam insulation is cheaper than closed-cell and is as equally as effective in residential and commercial projects in providing thermal comfort, air-sealing and moisture management. In fact, open-cell spray foam can actually provide sound attenuation thanks to its soft, sponge-like texture.

AREA

What are the total square feet/area being sprayed? Is the building being completely sprayed with Icynene spray foam insulation or is it only a new addition to the building that needs to be sprayed? Of course, a larger area needing to be insulation will have a higher initial investment than a smaller area, but again, think about the long-term return on investment with reduced energy consumption due to Icynene’s air sealing qualities.

LABOR

Remember to factor in the price of the spray foam contractor’s labor. Unlike painting, spray foam insulation is not a DIY project and requires a certified professional to apply the material throughout the building envelope. Investing in a certified spray foam contractor will also provide peace of mind.

While not an exhaustive list, it’s clear that the price of spray foam insulation can be varied and there is no one set price for the insulation product. It’s best to remind your clients that while there is a greater upfront investment for spray foam insulation than some of the cheaper insulation materials on the market, the dividends that spray foam insulation pays back immediately and over the long-term will provide a return on investment that will be appreciated by the client.
